Plasterboard recycling service
British Gypsum’s initiative
The first to introduce a Plasterboard Recycling Service in the UK, British Gypsum invested considerable funds in developing the service, a major innovation for an industry faced with escalating waste costs.
The recycling of plasterboard waste
The Plasterboard Recycling Service (PRS) was first introduced in 2001. The service was introduced due to customer requests to recycle plasterboard waste generated from their construction sites. This need was driven by environmental concerns and to divert recyclable waste away from landfill.
The service is available to main contractors and house builders within the housing and commercial markets, specialist trade dry lining sub contractors and merchants.
It offers a cost effective alternative to landfill and also is able to target sites of all sizes with various methods of collecting plasterboard waste from construction sites.
The benefit for the customers
British Gypsum provides feedback to its customers to help reduce waste and better manage their waste programmes. Detailed reports on the amount of waste produced, the cost of using the service, and any contamination which reduces the cost effectiveness of the service help to show the effectiveness of the service month by month.
With the Landfill Tax increase and the introduction of Site Waste Management Plans where any construction site over a total value of £250,000 will have to have a formalised waste plan, this will lead to further increased uptake of British Gypsum’s Plasterboard Recycling Service.
