The SuperAbrasives
Grinding glass
Flat glass is the third outlet for Saint-Gobain's SuperAbrasives after the automotive industry and its subcontractors and the cutting tool market.
SuperAbrasives are used for manufacturing
- car windows,
- television screens,
- ophthalmic or precision optics,
- technical glass products – quartz, prisms, laser diodes, blocs of glass or lead for protection against radiation in the nuclear industry,
- architectural and decorative glazing, etc.
The Industrial SuperAbrasives business unit currently supplies 25% of the Group's European glass factories' needs, the aim being to ultimately increase this to 50%.
The Industrial SuperAbrasives business unit recently established a closer relationship with Saint-Gobain Sekurit, the Group's automotive glazing activity. It supplies Sekurit with diamond based grinding wheels and hollow drills used for drilling and dressing automotive glazing under the Supercut brand name. Furthermore, these grinding wheels must be regularly re-profiled, and this has led to specialised units being installed for instance at Saint-Gobain Sekurit Herzogenrath site in Germany.
